Material Overview

Nylon ESD is a specialized polymer designed with electrostatic dissipative properties, specifically developed to prevent damage to electronic components, data loss, or performance issues caused by static charge. It offers exceptional ruggedness, making it suitable for functional applications where durability is essential. This material is engineered to control the flow of electrostatic charge, allowing it to dissipate more slowly and in a controlled manner compared to conductive materials.

Mechanical Properties

The base material used for Nylon ESD is PA2200, also known as Nylon 12, which is a polyamide commonly used in additive manufacturing processes like selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing. Its exceptional mechanical properties make it an ideal choice for applications requiring strength and longevity. At Forge Labs, we utilize high-performance nylon powder from EOS, ensuring optimal mechanical properties.  Nylon 12 exhibits impressive tensile strength, making it well-suited for functional prototypes and end-use parts that experience mechanical stress and load-bearing requirements. It also possesses excellent impact resistance, enabling effective energy absorption and dissipation. This characteristic proves valuable in applications where sudden shocks or collisions may occur, such as in the automotive industry. Nylon 12 maintains its shape and resists deformation under applied loads, ensuring dimensional stability and precision in printed parts. This aspect is particularly advantageous for applications necessitating accurate geometries and tight tolerances.

Chemical Compatibility

Nylon12 demonstrates excellent thermal and chemical resistance.  It is resistant to many chemicals, oils, and greases, allowing it to withstand exposure to various substances without deteriorating or losing its mechanical properties. This chemical resistance broadens its range of potential applications, including those in contact with corrosive substances.

Thermal Properties

Nylon 12 can withstand relatively high temperatures without significant loss of its mechanical properties. It has a melting point around 175°C (347°F), making it suitable for applications that require resistance to elevated temperatures, such as under-the-hood automotive components or hot environments.

Applications

3D printed ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) parts are widely used in industries where static electricity poses risks, such as in electronics manufacturing, clean rooms, aerospace, defense, automotive, data centers, and medical equipment production. They are essential in preventing static damage to sensitive components and are also employed in oil and gas industries to mitigate spark risks. The customizability offered by 3D printing technology allows for tailored applications in robotics, automation, and tool creation, enhancing their utility in diverse settings.
