Standard Finishes

All 3D printed parts ship with supports removed, along with additional technology specific finishing to offer a consistent, high quality surface finish. The standard surface finish of 3D printed parts is characterized by a texture that reflects the layer-by-layer construction inherent to the additive manufacturing process. This texture can vary in appearance and feel, ranging from relatively smooth to noticeably ribbed or ridged, depending on the printing technology, resolution, and material used. Parts are removed of supports, defects or blemishes are sanded down.

The standard finish is often considered a starting point, with many parts undergoing additional treatments like sanding, polishing, or painting to meet specific requirements. Whether you’re looking for a functional finish for color-coded components or an aesthetic finish like soft-touch or high-gloss paint, take a look at your wide range of options here. Depending on the technology selected, post processing options include a combination of bead blasting, sanding, dying, and painting, tumbling and vapor smoothing.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

Natural White

Natural white is the raw color for all Selective Laser Sintered parts. Parts are depowdered using glass media, leaving a finely textured white finish.

HP Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF)

Natural grey is the raw color for all Multi-Jet Fusion parts. Parts are depowdered using media blasting leaving a finely textured natural grey color.

Stereolithography (SLA)

Supports are removed and the part is lightly sanded with 400 grit sandpaper to leave a uniform white finish. Transparent parts have supports removed with no sanding.

PolyJet Matrix Technology (PJM)

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

Soluble supports are dissolved in an ultrasonic cleaning tanking. Physical supports on high temperature materials are removed by hand (if required).
